Water Damage: Causes, Types, and Severity

Causes of Water Damage

Water damage can result from various sources, including:

  • Natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Broken pipes or appliances
  • Condensation
  • Sewage backups

Types of Water Damage

Based on the source of water and severity, water damage is classified into three categories:

  • Category 1: Clean water, such as from a broken pipe or overflowing toilet, causes minimal damage and is usually easy to clean up.
  • Category 2: Grey water from toilets, sinks, or dishwashers contains some contaminants and requires professional cleaning.
  • Category 3: Black water from sewage backups or floodwaters is highly contaminated and can pose significant health risks, requiring extensive remediation.

How Much Water Does It Take to Cause Water Damage?

Even a small amount of water can cause significant damage if it is not addressed promptly. Studies indicate that as little as 1/4 inch of water can cause structural damage to drywall, flooring, and furniture. However, the extent of damage depends on the type of water, duration of exposure, and materials affected.
